El Parque Vargas de Limón

17-Apr-2016 • Limón Costa Rica

I had read a lot about Parque Vargas before we even arrived in Limón, Costa Rica. I had read about some locals who'd point out sloths to tourists for a small fee and how walkable the center of town was from port. Little did I know the port was literally right in downtown, much to my total delight. Parque Vargas or Vargas Park in English was in fact just across the street from the ferry terminal.

Just like us, there were a number of cruise passengers who opted to tour the tiny town on their own. There was quite a number of us at the park at one point, I had to wait until they had all left the premises so I could take solo shots of the park's attractions. A few park visitors from abroad have criticized the site as crumbling and decaying. I found the opposite when we got there. In fact, many paths were being built within the park for people to walk on. There were some workers who kept busy cleaning the entire area too.

What I found most surprising was the presence of monuments. Some historical, others artsy.

I found these statues in the park very Polynesian looking.

Sure enough, there was a young man pointing out the sloths to visitors when we got to the park. This was one of them.

We lucked out. We didn't have to join a shore excursion to see any animals. These two owls were quietly perched on one of the tree branches of the many trees in Parque Vargas.
