Showboat Was Swell!

1-Jul-2014 • San Francisco United States

It had been a while since Marc and I went to the theater to watch an Off Broadway play or the opera. Well tonight, we went out to do just that. It was a few weeks ago when we passed by the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center also known as the War Memorial Opera House facing City Hall and saw the ads for Showboat, La Traviata, and Madame Butterfly. We went to the Opera Box Office and inquired about availability and prices. We scored some inexpensive tickets and bought two for tonight's showing at 8 pm.

Given that the play was scheduled on a week night ending at 11 pm, I really felt the theater was going to be empty. The complete exact opposite happened. The War Memorial Opera House was packed. I mean really, really packed with absolutely every seat taken from the orchestra up to the balcony. Who would have thought. Everyone was there. Some dressed to the nines while the others were simply in jeans. One thing for sure though, we enjoyed ourselves a lot. The play was a hit.

Next to the Showboat poster right before we entered the War Memorial Opera House to watch the play.

The stage. I have now lost count how many Broadway and Off Broadway plays I have watched since arriving in the US. Miss Saigon was the very first one I ever saw in New York last 1994 with Marc while the Phantom of the Opera was the first one I saw in San Francisco a year later with my mom. If I am not mistaken, Wicked was the last one I saw together with Marc while Young Frankenstein was the last one I watched by myself.

Intermission time at the boonies, I mean balcony.

We were so surprised to see San Francisco City Hall all lit up for the night. It was beautiful. I bet the colors will change this Friday, The Fourth of July, to red, white, and blue.
