The Wat Mahathat and The National Museum of Bangkok

28-Mar-2014 • Bangkok Thailand

I am making a wild guess here. This Buddha may have been inside the Wat Mahathat in downtown Bangkok. All I remember is that it was in a wat very close to a market. A local helped us find it but for a fee.

From the temple, we all went to the National Museum of Bangkok. Being the culture vulture that I am, I wanted to see more of Thai culture beyond the wats and the buddhas.

This place was more an outdoor museum. At the time of my visit, the museum had three permanent exhibition galleries. The first one dealt with Thai History, the second was about the Archaeology and Art History, while the third and last was about the Decorative Arts and Ethnology.

The Sala Longsong Pavilion

This pavilion one belonged to the Palace of King Vajiravudh, Rama VI, in Nakhon Pathom.

The Samran-Mukhamat Pavilion. It once belonged to the Dusit Palace and was moved to museum during the time of King Rama VII.

The Buddhaisawan Chapel

This chapel was built in 1787 to house the important Buddha image, Phra Buddhasihing. Inside the chapel, the mural paintings depict scenes from the life of the Buddha.
