Last Day in Budapest

12-Nov-2012 • Budapest Hungary

On our last day in Budapest, we took things easy since by our third day in the Hungarian capital we had already seen the most major sights of the city.  Of course, like we always do every time we travel, we explored the parts we had not visited long enough.

We just walked over to the area where Gellert Hill was and visited the Gellert Spa and Hotel along the way.  Besides the Szechenyi Baths, this was the other must visit for tourists and visitors seeking to soak in the popular thermals baths.  We had heard of the Gellert Spa and Hotel, we simply didn't realize it was so close to the Central Market and actually walking distance from our IBIS Hotel.

The Gellert Hotel and Spa

The hotel's famous thermal baths are located on the right side.  The baths have their own entrance.  At the time of our visit which was late in the afternoon, only a handful of tourists and visitors were going in to take a dip.  Szcehnyi on the other hand had to turn away visitors due to full capacity the day prior which was a Sunday.

The Cave Church on the side of Gellert Hill was right across the Gellert Spas and Thermal Baths

This is Gellert Hill. Can you see the Cave Church on the left hand side of the hill?

From here we went back to our hotel and visited the area surrounding it.  Our IBIS Hotel after all was not only surrounded by cafes and restaurants but majestic palaces as well.  I believe it was called the Palace District.  This district was once the most prestigious neighborhood in Pest.  The recommended starting point of the tour to the still standing palaces of the is Hungarian National Museum.  From there the Italian Institute of Culture is nearby.

We saw this very old sign on the gate surrounding the Hungarian National Museum.

We passed by this church many times during our three day stay in Budapest.  We even saw a Hungarian couple about to wed in the church.
