The National Shrine of Saint Francis in San Francisco's North Beach

The shrine within a shrine

Yesterday, my partner, Marc, and I decided to take a walk around North Beach, San Francisco's own Little Italy. Although this part of the city is very close to where we live, we actually had not visited it nor gone anywhere near it in years. This is indeed the part of the city which prides itself of its Italian heritage. Thus, it is no surprise to see Italian flags raised proudly from window sills or on rooftops.

While walking aimlessly around, we passed by a church which had an even smaller church in it. It turned out to be the National Shrine of Saint Francis. It truly was a slice of Europe in North beach. I overheard the man keeping an eye on the place mention to an out of towner that the murals were all painted in Italy and shipped over to this SF church. It was indeed a beautiful sight.
