Mahahual, The Go to Beach in Costa Maya

26-Apr-2016 • Costa Maya, Quintana Roo Mexico

There was no doubt I wanted to go to Mahahual when our ship, the Norwegian Pearl, arrived in Costa Maya. It was our second time to be here in a year. Unlike last spring 2015 when we ran out of time after our trip to the Chacchoben Mayan ruins. This time around, we had the whole day at our disposal to do whatever we wanted on our own. After asking for directions from a few locals working at the terminal including the security men at the terminal's entrance, we decided to walk it. Everyone said it was just a short 15 minute walk. Little did we know, it was more like 3o minutes. With the heat and humidity, it felt like an eternity. By the time we arrived at the blue colored waters of the beaches at Mahahual, I was drenched in sweat.

I couldn't help but dive in the inviting waters right away. I first thought all the beaches were private just like what I read on the net. Since there were locals swimming at the beach we reached, I simply joined them and I had a blast. There weren't many people swimming and it seemed like I had the entire beach to myself.

Every local I spoke to when I asked for directions to go to the beach told me to look for the faro or lighthouse. True enough, as soon as we saw it, the beach was right behind it.
