Chacchoben Mayan Ruins

10-Apr-2015 • Costa Maya, Mexico

The Chacchoben Mayan Ruins in Yucatan, Mexico were an awesome sight. It was really just before Marc and I traveled on this cruise did we both learn of the existence of these ruins. We knew we were going to dock in Costa Maya and it was either an excursion there or a swim in the blue waters of Mahajual for us on this day. It was strongly suggested by previous travelers though that anyone visiting Costa Maya saw it and that's why we went.

From the Costa Maya Cruise Terminal, we boarded a bus together with a group of 44 other passengers from Norwegian Dawn and we traveled deep into the jungles of the Yucatan. Although we lucked out there were none of the insects we were warned about, the sun here was extemely painful on the skin.

While within the premises of Chacchoben, I decided to separate from the group and wandered on my own taking pictures at the same time. Of course, I made sure I did not go too far away lest I got left behind. While I did appreciate the guide and his desire to make us learn about the history of the Mayans and the ruins they left behind, I felt time was very limited to see the ruins up close. I did not regret my decision. There must have been at least 12 buses full of tourists from NCL and Carnival then. The entire area where the ruins were was busy and packed alright.

This was my group. We all had to huddle close and stay in the very limited shade. Although the sun was scorching hot, I was grateful we had perfect weather every day we were on vacation.
