Mexican Souvenirs

10-Apr-2015 • Cozumel Mexico

Anyone who loves and collects Mexican handicrafts will feel like he has died and gone to heaven when visiting Cozumel. The entire town is geared towards tourism and there are stores galore offering souvenirs of all sorts. While it is true that practically every vendor or shop owner asks every passersby to come and enter his store, I did not find them overly pushy nor aggressive. A simple "No, gracias." was more than enough to make them stop inviting. Every one actually just stopped.

Goods were sold both in fancy galleries to makeshift stalls along the sidewalk. I had to control myself and opted not to buy anything. It would have been nice to have purchased some glazed Mexican pottery similar to those I bought in this area many years ago. However, I am aware that there really is no more room for them in my place.

Lucha Libre masks by the hundreds

Maracas were sold everywhere. Some five for a dollar elsewhere a dollar a piece.

The quintessential destination bags

I don't really know what these are called. They resembled the framed artwork I saw in West Elm stores back home.

The Dia de los Muertos dolls seem to be popular regardless of the season.

Local chocolate

I loved this pottery. I bought some fifteen years ago and gave them away to charity. Little did I know they would be collector's items. These items had gone up in price big time. How I wished I kept them now.

Mariachi Hats

Bracelets with embroidered names on them. I heard one seller state that he could make one in just three minutes.
