Cozumel, Mexico, Norwegian Dawn's First Port of Call

8-Apr-2015 • Cozumel Mexico

Our stop in Cozumel last week was our second time in Caribbean Mexico. On this second visit, however, we were determined to see the city and get to know it well, at least during the day our ship was going to be there. It turned out to be a good decision since Cozumel was a lively port with very wonderful people. It also felt very safe. Just by walking down the malecon or by the seawall, Marc and I discovered so many places we otherwise would have missed had we signed up for a shore excursion to a beach or to a Mayan ruin again. We already skipped this place once when we went there the first time ages ago and we took an excursion to Tulum. Tulum was spectacular but our hearts were really set on exploring Cozumel this time.

There was a Disney ship next to our Norwegian Dawn. After disembarking, we all walked to the cruise terminal called Punta Langosta. It was like a mini mall with lots of shops selling trinkets and souvenirs. Upon exiting the place we were met by lots of tour guides, taxis, vans, and buses all ready to take tourists all over Cozumel. I liked the price list on the floor stand for everyone to see. It felt that business there was on the up and up and there was no need to haggle with the cab and van drivers unlike in many Caribbean islands.

I was so glad our ship docked right close to the city center. There was no need for a cab to take us anywhere. We simply used our feet to take us places.

Here's a view of our ship

We saw many cruise ships on this trip. Besides Disney's, there were actually four more ships docked on the farther side of Cozumel's city center.

The light house at Punta Langosta

There were many bars and restaurants at Punta Langosta. Senor Frogs and Hooters were some of the most popular ones tourists from everywhere flocked to and ate in.

There were no Walgreens nor CVS stores here but there were plenty of mini marts like this one at the cruise terminal.
