BART, The Bay Area Rapid Transport

12-Oct-2014 • San Francisco, California United States

I have taken BART trains practically every day to go to work and back for over two decades now. Although the system is a bit old and has experienced more breakdowns lately more than anytime in its entire history, it is still very efficient, relatively safe, and reliable. Thousands of people use it everyday and rely on it for their means of transport within the Bay Area.

I took this picture mid afternoon on my way back to the city. Trust you me, every inch of space in this BART car is used up during peak hours. It is standing room only in these train cars going into the city in the mornings til 9 am and back to the suburbs beginning 4 pm weekdays.

I used to dislike the seats in these trains in years past. When new, the seats felt clean and smelled it too. After years of use, however, they did look very gritty and absolutely filthy. I know people who placed newspapers on these seats before actually sitting on them. Thank goodness, BART officials upholstered the seats with the rubbery blue leather. I no longer cringe when I actually sit on them now.

Sometimes, taking the BART train from SFO may come out cheaper than taking a cab when heading out to the city. A cab ride will run you somewhere between $50 and $60. The BART ticket costs around $7 per person. However, if there are plenty of you, then taking a cab might be better.
