The Notre Dame of Paris. This gothic cathedral took over a hundred years to build. It is known to literature as the haunt of Victor Hugo's tragic novel character, the hunch-backed bell ringer.

What a change! The very first time I saw it back in 1988, it was completely covered with soot. In fact, I bought a postcard of the cathedral and it showed it completely black due to centuries of smoke and pollution.
