Voyager Maritime Museum of Auckland

8-Jul-2011 • Auckland New Zealand

Here in this museum, one discovers amazing stories of Polynesian voyaging across the Pacific, European exploration and immigration, New Zealand's international yachting success, New Zealand's worst maritime disaster, as well as Auckland's stunning harbour.

As soon as we entered the museum, we went and sat in a mini theater to view a short film about New Zealand and its history.  Since we entered the museum as soon as it opened at 9 am, we were the very first visitors to the place that morning. There was only another American tourist with a child in the theater with us.  As soon as the film ended, we went exploring the museum.  Their exhibit on Polynesian art further solidified my appreciation for the art from that part of the world.  It was truly impressive and beautiful.

Here are some of the numerous displays of Polynesian boats and canoes in the Polynesian voyagers gallery.

Right around the displays of water vessels, one can see oars made of wood hanging on the walls all around the Polynesian gallery.

There were some tortoise shells as well.
