The Island of Corregidor Part II

21-Dec-2010 • Corregidor Philippines

Corregidor is replete with monuments and statues giving homage to US and Filipino soldiers who fought in the Second World War.  It is no surprise to find a statue of the first president of the Commonwelath Republic of the Philippines, Manuel L. Quezon.  He worked very closely with Gen. Douglas MacArthur.  He died in the US of tuberculosis while the war in Asia and the Pacific was going on.

This tunnel served many purposes for the American and Filipino forces during the war.  They had offices in here, as well as a make shift hospital and supply room.  It protected well from bombs and gunfire.

A closer view of the Spanish Lighthouse

I went all the way up to the highest point of the tower.  The way up was no big problem.  Going down with the very narrow stairs inside the tower, however, was terrifying.

Right opposite the Spanish Lighthouse stood this tower.

Return, the General did to his beloved Philippines, his home in Asia.
