Ruddy's General Store, circa 1930

There were a few museums Marc and I visited in downtown Palm Springs.  My favorite of them all hands down was the tiny Ruddy's General Store which was a recreation of a mercantile store back in the 1930s.  We stayed a full hour here just looking at the displays.  "What?  An hour?  Heck, I spend hours and hours in museums", some would say.  True, but Ruddy's General Store and Museum is made up of only one room.  That's it.  Admission fee, 95 cents.  Folks, it was so worth it.  It was a magnificent example of Americana.

This museum was founded by Jim Ruddy in 1983 so he could integrate his extensive 35 year collection of general store merchandise with the museum he purchased in the Mid-West.  The pamphlet about the museum also states that it is basically a collection of Depression-Era liquidator who had kept his pick of the finest store fixtures and merchandise in his basement for 40 years.  The result of which is one of the largest and most complete displays of unused general store merchandise in the country.

Recognize any famous American brands?  I do.  Carnation, Nabisco, Butterfinger, Baby Ruth
