The Templo Mayor at the Zocalo

20-Jul-2022 • Mexico City Mexico

Of all the major sights in Mexico City, the Templo Mayor was the first attraction that my partner and I saw during our week long visit.

We intended to go inside the Metropolitan Cathedral at first but since it was Palm Sunday, there were literally thousands of devotees and mass goers in line waiting to hear and celebrate mass.  Tourist visits were not allowed then.

Right around the cathedral was the Templo Mayor as well as its museum.  We bought our tickets to enter and began exploring.  The museum was very impressive.  There were lots of exhibits all very unique to the Mexican indigenous people and culture

Visiting the museum was likewise a good respite from the oppressive heat we were experiencing.  I was totally surprised by the weather.  I was expecting it to be cooler but obviously it wasn't.

There was a free public area from where to view the ruins of the temple.  We took ours from the paid area on our way to the museum.

Can you imagine how old these ruins are?

I remember seeing this as soon as we entered.  The Cranium Nail Wall consisted of what else, human skulls!

The Cuahxicalli Eagle

Of all things to see inside the museum, the Tlalecuhtli Sculpture was the undisputed main attraction.  Displayed prominently on one floor, it could be seen from the all the floors above it and one couldn't help but feel in awe of it.  It was truly jaw dropping.
