The Museum of Anthropology, Soumaya, and JUMEX

20-Jul-2022 • Mexico City Mexico

Our second full day in Mexico City was totally dedicated to museum visits.  Mexico City had several world famous ones and we couldn't miss the fabulous Museum of Anthropology located close to Chapultepec Castle.

It was already mid afternoon when we arrived here and the line of people wanting to enter was long.  I remember wondering why the line didn't move.  It so happened the museum staff only allowed people in according to set time schedules.  I believe we started moving at the strike of 3 pm.

Once inside, we had to leave our backpacks at the cloak room and then paid for our admission tickets.  I advise everyone to pay by credit card.

I have to say, this museum was absolutely stunning.  Room after room there were exhibits that were left us speechless.

Mexican culture is definitely rich and beautiful.   I hope to visit here again sometime soon.  There were many other museums like the Soumaya and JUMEX which we only got to see from the outside.  There were too many people waiting to get in.  We'll visit them when we return to Mexico City.

This is the line that we initially saw when we arrived to visit the museum. It was hot, oppressively hot that afternoon.

I have uploaded many pictures here to remind me of what I saw inside the museum.  Some have captions while others don't.

Impressive Mexican pottery which tells a story

A diorama depicting life in the old days.

A local scene: women selling produce in a market

Men playing the guitar

A depiction of a carnival

Offerings for the dearly departed usually prepared on the Day of the Dead, November 1st, every year.  Per Mexican tradition, the living family members place the favorite food of their deceased loved ones at the altar.  The objective is not for the departed to eat them but to smell the aroma of the food they once enjoyed while still living in the physical world.

I must say, the stone work of the Mayan people were fascinating.  There were plenty both in and outside of the museum.

Paintings on stone were equally beautiful besides the stone carvings.

Here's the other part of the the painting on stone

I waited for this couple to move so I could get a clean shot but they lingered.  I decided to include them in the shot and I think the picture came out fine.

This particular stone work was located in an outdoor garden.

Colorful etchings on stone

This was the museum courtyard.  We patted ourselves on the back after we got to see every corner of the museum.  It was tiring but we sure were happy to have seen them all.

Right in front of the Soumaya was JUMEX, another impressive museum, which we will have to visit upon our return.

The site of the Soumaya Museum was spectacular!  We didn't get to visit.  The line outside was looong!
