Visiting North Cyprus

3-Aug-2019 • Lefkosa Cyprus, Turkish Fed. State

It was a thrill for us to cross the border between North and South Cyprus. Going through the checkpoint on Ledras Street took less than 10 minutes each time. All we had to do was pass by the tiny checkpoint on the Greek Cyprus side and show the immigration officers our passport. They typed something into their computer system and off we went. I was hoping that our passport would get stamped but it didn't happen. A few steps down the border, we underwent the same procedure on the Turkish side.

The very first thing we saw as soon as we stepped ono the north side was the ever present shops selling souvenirs and fake goods. Burberry, Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, you name it, the Turks had it. All fake. I wanted to buy one bag but Marc strongly advised me not to. He likewise warned me that whatever fake goods I bought could be confiscated when we reached the Greek side. Hence, no fake purchases for me folks!

I did have a blast shopping for Turkish rugs here. I actually bought three over two visits. I am so happy with those purchases! Oh yes!

Anyway, I was really in awe of the old historic buildings here. Truly beautiful!

Here's a view of the Great Khan on the outside.

The Great Khan

This round building in the middle of the courtyard housed a small prayer room on the very top.

This is what the room looked like.

Marc and I walked all around the second floor of the center. We saw lots of stalls selling trinkets and souvenirs.
