The Maha Wizaya Pagoda, Yet Another Temple in Yangon

5-Feb-2017 • Yangon Myanmar

A mere few steps away from the main entrance to the Shwedagon, I insisted that we visited this pagoda as it looked absolutely grand from the street. I certainly was right. This pagoda was rather new having been built only last 1980. It is said that it is a mixture of traditional and modern style elements. As we got nearer the pagoda it dawned on us that we had to wear the longyi and take off our shoes and socks once again. I must say, it was quite a pain. First of all, tying the knot so that the longyi would not come off was a chore, a real chore to do. Second, we were quite hesitant to take off our shoes as we had just put them on minutes earlier. Seeing that we had a hard time making the knot of our longyi, a young man standing nearby came over and offered to help. It was quite a funny scene, I say.

What made this pagoda different from the Shwedagon was the absence of hundreds of visitors. It was so peaceful and quiet here. While there were some worshippers, it just seemed like we had the temple all to ourselves at the time we arrived. It was so quiet!

Isn't this temple just grand looking?

This was the altar inside.
