The New St. Mary's Cathedral

12-Feb-2016 • San Francisco United States

I have always blogged about Old St. Mary's Cathedral in Chinatown which is my go to church for Sunday worship. Little do visitors to San Francisco know that this church has two branches. Its old and historic cathedral located on the corner of Grant and California streets sits right in the middle of Chinatown while the new, humongous, and minimalist branch is located along Geary Boulevard close to Japantown.

Shortly after visiting the temporary Super Bowl installations in the Civic Center last February 6, Marc and I went on a walkabout and passed by New St. Mary's Cathedral. We had both attended mass here decades ago but this time around, we decided to take a closer look at the church. It being Saturday afternoon, it was empty and devoid of any worshippers. In fact, there were more tourists than locals at the time of our visit. I knew it was the best time to take pictures and capture images of the church we are fortunate to have in the city of Saint Francis.

Here's a view of the main entrance from inside the church.

This very long and massive minimalist chandelier hangs right in the middle of the church

The ceiling

A closer look at the ceiling. I love the artsy touch to it.

The organ which in itself looks like an artistic masterpiece
