Why Take Pictures?

People take pictures for many reasons. I like to take pictures when I travel because I want to remember my trips and vacations. I am the sort of person who wants to document stuff. I do not spend my money on travel only to forget them after time passes. I have realized that had it not been for the pictures I have taken and labeled, I really would have forgotten the many wonderful places I have seen and visited in the past. Moreover, the longer it has been after my trip to a certain city or country, the greater the chances I will no longer recall the names of the lesser known monuments and attractions. It has happened to me. I want the beautiful memories to last a lifetime.

Some people laugh at those who take so many pictures. I feel that if I am not bothering anyone, why should anyone care? I do suggest being mindful of others and being respectful at all times when you shoot.

I cannot tell you the number of times I got irked by other travelers' selfish behavior. One example, I was in the De Young Museum a few weeks ago and a group of visitors had gathered in front of a beautiful painting. Each one of them was admiring a certain oil painting whose subject was a young Scottish socialite back in either the late 1800s or early 1900s. Suddenly, a man cuts in front of all of them and shoots away as if all the ones behind him were not there. Then, there was another instance, also in the same museum, when another person literally stood in front of another painting taking pictures and trying to capture that perfect shot in the right light and in the perfect angle for so long making it impossible for other people to admire the painting. This particular person had become so ridiculously territorial and obnoxious.

When I suggest take pictures, take some to remember your trip by. Take beautiful ones. Take several. However, caution must also be taken so as not to irritate or inconvenience others who wish to do the same. Respect and consideration is key. Otherwise, go ahead and enjoy yourself. Take pictures and take lots of them. I do.
