Ibis Hotel Graz

29-Jul-2014 • Graz Austria

The IBIS has always been a good hotel choice for Marc and me every time we travel to Central and Eastern Europe. Thus, when we were planning our trip to Graz in Austria and we learned that there was an IBIS there too, we did not think twice about where we were going to stay especially since it was right across the train station.

There really are no surprises for us every time we check in this hotel chain. The layout is the same for all IBIS rooms every where, be it in Europe or Asia. The rooms are basic but so are the room prices which have helped us keep our travel expenses down for a great majority of our visits to cities like Frankfurt, Berlin, Prague, Budapest, and Vienna.

The IBIS Hotel in Graz right across the Graz Railway Station. This was our hotel for three days. I normally recommend all IBIS Hotels but I am afraid I cannot do the same for this one. People we met, all Graz locals, told us that the train station area was not safe and after having been accosted by fake police here on our second to the last day in this otherwise beautiful city, I now tend to agree.

Our room's very faulty airconditioning unit was another reason we were not happy with this IBIS branch. The unit simply did not work. Thank goodness there was no heatwave otherwise we would have fried in the room. To think, we asked to change rooms twice because it was hot in the original room we were assigned. We thought the second room we got was better but it was not. We had to open the room's windows at night to let air in.

I likewise did not appreciate housekeeping not replacing the cover of the thin duvet I took down from the closet. It had pubic hair I assume came from the previous guest. I placed the duvet back in the bag it was in and informed the front desk personnel about it. The lady on duty immediately made a call. I assumed everything was going to be okay. I saw the duvet placed on our bed upon our return but my inspection still showed some body hair on it. I no longer wanted to make a fuss and just shared the one Marc used.

To be fair, the front desk staff were very friendly and kind. Miguel from Malaga, was especially accommodating. One night, we returned to the hotel with food in need of reheating. He took our food to the hotel kitchen and heated it all up in the microwave. He even gave us plates and utensils to eat our dinner with for the night.
