Filipino Food Gaining Ground in the City

30-Aug-2014 • San Francisco, California United States

I have always lamented the dearth of Filipino Restaurants in San Francisco. Marc and I always have to drive to the suburbs like South San Francisco, San Bruno, or the East Bay to have some grub from the Philippines.

Today though, while walking around the city center, we chanced upon a mini Filipino food fair at the Embarcadero as well as the Señor Sisig food truck on the corner of Powell and Ellis Streets.

Ever since I arrived in the US, I have only known Americans to eat Lumpia, pansit, and adobo. As of late, I do get the impression that sisig has joined this short list. However, the sisig non-Filipinos fancy and love is the Americanized version of chopped barbecued pork with onions and jalapeños and not the real Philippine version.

I do hope Filipino food takes off really soon and become as popular as Chinese and Thai food. That would be the day.

I thought Marc was just kidding when he said there was a Filipino food fair going on at the Embarcadero as we walked passed by it. Little did I know he was not kidding when I saw this huge sign over the temporary stage at Justin Hermann Plaza.

It was busy at the food fair and the lines were long in front of the kiosks.

This was a Filipino-American chef explaining the dishes he was going to cook for the crowd that had gathered.
