The Grand Hotel

1-Apr-2014 • Taipei Taiwan, R.O.C.

The building of the Grand Hotel Taipei definitely lived up to its name. The whole site was truly, truly grand. It reminded us of a Chinese palace from the olden days. It was Chiang Kai Shek who commissioned it to be built, primarily for foreign dignitaries to stay in whenever they came to Taiwan for official visits. Political figures like Richard Nixon, Bill Clinton, and Lee Kuan Yew have stayed here. For a time, it was considered Taiwan's tallest building and was once considered one of the world's top ten leading hotels.

Aint it grand?

Once past the main entrance, we stepped into the very spacious lobby that lead to the elegant staircase.

Everywhere we looked, red, the color of good luck, covered the walls and carpeted the floors.

On the elegant staircase

This was a restaurant in the lobby where buffett brunches and lunches were served

I loved the stone mural behind me. It will adorn my condo in San Francisco very nicely. I wonder if it will ever go on sale? Hmmm.
