Oporto, Portugal

19-Nov-2013 • Oporto Portugal

Oporto was our very first stop in Portugal. There was no denying I was excited to be in Portuguese soil. I had always wanted to go but couldn't because of time and my studies in Spain. Anyway, I sure was glad I finally made it. I didn't realize Oporto was so close to Salamanca. As far as I can recall, it didn't take long to reach it as soon as we crossed the Spanish and Portuguese border.

This was the hotel we stayed in. Given that this was taken over 20 years ago, I have no idea how the hotel looked inside. One thing did strike me as soon as we checked in. The Portuguese spoke way better English than the Spaniards and they looked very similar to the Galicians of Spain. Very fair skinned with beautiful milky white complexion.

Taken after lunch at the Café Majestic. Majestic was definitely the best word to describe the café/restaurant. It was out of this world. Dining there made me feel I was back in the 1800 hundreds surrounded by chandeliers, tapestries, old world furniture simply full of glam and charm. A must see whenever in Oporto.

Just when cities were modernizing their modes of transportation, trams were still in operation in Oporto. Honestly, they were beautiful.

I loved the blue tiles used to decorate churches with all over Portugal. I say this was the distinct mark of Portuguese churches and cathedrals.

At Cathedral Square with a superb view of the orange colored tiled roofs of the city's houses and buildings

This was the group I traveled with to Portugal. This group shot was taken inside the winery where we had the chance to try samples.

With some of my fellow travelers from Spain.

Taken in the city's old section. I remember the bus stopping here and advising us to take pictures.

In front of another tiled church. Pretty, isn't it?

Oporto at dusk. We had lunch in a Chinese Restaurant here. Our first day in the city was unforgettable.
