Walking around Helsinki Streets
After our trip to Suomenlinna, Marc and I just walked around some more in the city and visited some shops and restaurants.
We first saw Kappeli on TV after watching travel show host and travel expert Rick Steeves eat there. Well we did go there. Their pastries looked truly pretty and delicious. They were priced three times as much as the pastries we saw in Stockmann's pasttry and bakery though. We decided not to eat there. We did all the touristy things like eating in famous and fancy restaurants in Easter Europe last year only to be let down. This time, we saved our money and bought pastries in chic Stockmann instead that same afternoon. We were able to buy tons for a fraction of the price.
The Espanande Park was quite elegant. It was lined by cafes, restaurants, and shops on every side. It was definitely a very lively shopping section of Helsinki.
Moreover, there were many Neo-Renaissance buildings reminscent of other European cities built here to replace the old wooden houses in the latter half of the 19th century. One of the most historic and beautiful buildings was the KAMP Hotelff one the corner of Kluuvikatu.
A few yards away was the equally popular FAZER Cafe and Restaurant. FAZER is the main brand of chocolate in Finland and I bought several bars to take home with me to the States. Not all of them made it home successfully with us though. We ate several of them even before we left the Baltics for Norway. The store reminded me of the DEMEL chocolate store in Vienna.
