Suomenlinna Part 2

18-Jul-2013 • Helsinki Finland

Suomenlinna was a huge island fortress. In its heyday, there were more people living here than in Helsinki. This was the reason why it took us quite a long time to tour the place. We did tend to linger at the major attractions.

A gate entrance to Suomenlinna

It was interesting to note that on one side, the wall looked so military in nature and yet once one went to its opposite side, the room within the rampart was used for something harmless like a library.

This is how the exact same wall pictured above looked on the other side.

This interesting building in the island is actually used as an administrative building.

The cove. This was quite popular among the locals for swimming. We saw a few swimming in its waters.

I first saw this cove on Rudy Maxa's travel program. He showed many Finns here for a day and there were many swimming in its waters. On the day of our visit, there weren't very many people. In fact the only ones we saw were a father with his baby girl as well as two female seniors, one of whom was about to swim.

I liked this gate a lot. It reminded me of another gate on the opposite side of the world, in Manila. One of the Intramuros Gate in Manila looked quite similar.

We were quite surprised to see the presence of many geese in Suomenlinna. They just went about their usual business, while all the tourists went about theirs. No problem.
