Caen

9-Jan-2013 • Caen France

Caen was our next stop after Rouen. We came to this town principally to visit the War Memorial where we viewed the exhibits about the Second World War and where we saw a very moving film about our world or planet. It was also here where we stayed for the night.

The Abbey of Saint Etienne

Arriving at the Abbey

The Abbey of Saint Etienne, also known as the Abbaye aux Hommes (Men's Abbey), is a former monastery, dedicated to Saint Stephen (Saint Etienne). It is considered along with its neighboring Abbaye aur Dames (Ladies Abbey), to be one of the most notable Romanesque buildings in Normandy. Like all major abbeys, it belonged to the Benedictine order.

The visit to Caen served as an introduction to our very memorable trip to the D-Day Landings and Normandy Beaches the following day.
