The Pittock Mansion at Christmas

11-Dec-2011 • Portland, Oregon United States

One of the nicest attractions we visited in Portland was the Pittock Mansion.  It reminded me of the stately mansions Marc and I visited in Newport, Rhode Island, just three summers ago.  Although not as grand as the mansions in the East Coast, it was interesting just the same and definitely worth visiting when in Portland.  The decorations just in time for the holidays made the place even look more attractive.

The Pittock Mansion in late fall

The British inspired room

This is one room in the mansion that was decorated to look  like a stately British library.

The teddy bears dressed as Beefeaters, the gift wrapped in the British flag, as well as the miniature scene depicting the Changing of the Guards at Buckingham Palace easily gave the room's theme away.

This room, on the other hand, was the French inspired room.

Different views of the kitchen inside the Pittock Mansion.  Given that it was the Christmas season, every room in the mansion was decorated to the hilt, even the bathrooms.

After visiting several rooms inside the mansion, it became clear to us that every room was decorated according to a theme.  The library was British inspired, the main living room was French, the kitchen, Italian, while the bedroom below was Asian.  The bamboo shaped poles of the bed, the Korean traditional gown for women and girls lying on the bed, the kimono hanging on the wall were just some of the tell tale sign.

What are the signs that that tell this bedroom has an Asian theme?  The black lacquered room divider, the silk pillows with Japanese prints, the Chinese dolls, the wooden pillow on the floor, and the fan on the wooden dark brown arm chair.

There were so many visitors in the mansion.  Marc and I literally had to revisit each and every room when the crowds had thinned out or had completely gone.

Christmas trees galore.  They were practically in every room of the mansion even the bathrooms.

Just as can be expected in many mansions in the late 1800s and early 1900s, many of the bedrooms inside the Pittock had on suite bathrooms complete with indoor plumbing and hot water; all luxuries only the rich of the period could afford.

Me at the end of our tour of the fabulous Pittock Mansion

On our way back to the car, we passed by the house of the mansion's caretaker.  The house has likewise been decorated although not as beautifully as the mansion.  It too is now a museum.  It had period furniture and a picture gallery showing the family who took take of and looked after the mansion and its surroundings.
