St. James Anglican Church, Sydney's Oldest Church
One can not afford to miss Sydney's oldest colonial church, St. James Anglican, when doing the rounds of the city's historic buildings. Built in 1822, the church was designed by architect and former convict, Francis Greenway. He, by the way, was also the architect of the Hyde Park Barracks. It is said that the church's spire served as a landmark for ships coming up the harbor in the olden days. Fast forward to the present, one can hardly say the same thing about the spire as it seems lost in the midst of skyscrapers.
A string ensemble had an afternoon performance when we first went there. We actually had to return a few hours later to tour the church and take pictures of its interior.
