The Rotunda Church of Saint George
The Rotunda Church of Saint George in Sofia was one historical building we passed by often as we went around the city sightseeing. What I found interesting was its location. It was in the courtyard between the hotel we stayed in, the Sofia Balkan Palace, and the elegant Presidency, the government building where the country's President worked. It is considered the oldest preserved building in the entire city, built at the time when Sofia was the home of Emperors Galerius and Constantine the Great.
Originally built in the early 4th century as a Roman Bath, it became a church during the Roman and Byzantine empires. It is a red brick structure that today belongs to the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.
